Our History

Prisoners in Tanzania face many challenges including inadequate health care services, spiritual immorality, inadequate counseling services, limited clothing materials, inadequate legal aid, lack of official resettlement and rehabilitation services just to mention a few.The Government alone cannot solve  these challenges facing the Prisoners without involvement of individuals, community, NGOs and other actors.

It was from this background that the TANZANIA PRISONERS HOPE FOUNDATION (TPHF)  was established in April 2022 to address some of these challenges, facing Prisoners in Tanzania Mainland.TPHF  is an independent non-profit organization that provides social services mainly to  Prisoners in Tanzania  Mainland.The Organization started officially  to provide social services to Segerea Prison in June,2022 and plans to roll over the services to other prisons in Tanzania Mainland upon the availability of Funds.

The TANZANIA PRISONERS HOPE FOUNDATION is committed to address some of these challenges by mobilizing funds and materials from individuals, private and public agencies within and outside Tanzania. This will ultimately enable the organization to effectively provide prison support services in Tanzania as per objectives of its establishment.

Be an organization that endeavors to transform the prisoners’ and ex-prisoners’ lives, socially, morally and materially for their self-reliance.

Our Mission

Promote and Rehabilitate the Welfare of prisoners and ex-prisoners in Tanzania.

MEMBERSHIP & GOVERNANCE

The Tanzania Prisoners Hope Foundation is comprised of members grouped in three; Founder Members , Ordinary Members, and Honorary Members which together play their part in providing  welfare services to Prisoners in Tanzania Mainland.

The Top Management of TPHF consists  of three entities  namely the Board of Directors,General Assembly and The Chief Executive Officer.There are three Managers who facilitate daily operation of the organization.

Mr Lucas Abrahamani

Mr. Lucas Abrahamani is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tanzania Prisoners Hope Foundation (TPHF) since its establishment in April 2022. He is a visionary and experienced leader as he championed the establishment of TPHF. Prior to TPHF, he worked with the Bank of Tanzania as an Economist for 32 years and 7 months since May 1989. While working with the Bank of Tanzania, he was seconded to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – Office of the Resident Representative in Tanzania for 2 years (July 1997 to June 1999) as a Research Assistant charged with the implementation of IMF-supported programs in Tanzania. After secondment at IMF, Mr. Mwimo worked in different departments at Head office and Economics departments at BOT Mbeya Branch, BOT Zanzibar Branch before his promotion to Director level in February 2016 at BOT Mtwara Branch. He  holds a M.Sc. (Macro-economic Policy and Planning in Developing Countries) from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom and a B.A. (Economics) from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He attended a lot of short courses within and outside the country.

Mr Lucas Abrahamani retired from public service in February 2022  after attaining 60 years of age. He is currently  providing spiritual counseling services to prisoners  in Segerea, Ukonga and Keko prisons in Dar es Salaam region.

 
Board Chairperson

Mr Odemari Rushita

Mr. Odemari Nitunga Rushita is the first chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tanzania Prisoners Hope Foundation (TPHF) since its establishment in April, 2022.  He is an experienced leader and currently works at Engineers Registration Board as Assistant Registrar (Director of Finance) -Finance and Administration since 2008 to-date. Before joining the Board, he worked at CCT –WAMA, Christian Council of Tanzania as a Finance and Administrative Manager from 2000 to 2008. He also worked as a part time tutor at the College of Business Education Dodoma Branch, Dar-es-Salaam Maritime Institute and CCT Conference and Training Centre from 2000-2002 and 2007. Before that, he was a full time Accountant at Christian Council of Tanzania, Conference and Training Centre from 1993 to 2000.

Mr. Rushita holds Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree from ESAMI and Maastricht School of Management (MsM) Nairobi, Kenya Campus and Advanced Diploma in Accountancy (ADA) from the Institute of Finance Management, Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania. Apart from academic qualifications, Mr. Rushita is a Certified Public Accountant -CPA (T) and has a diploma on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS-Diploma). He serves as a member in various professional and association bodies including Tanzania Association of Accountants where he was a Vice President and an Associate Member from 2018 to 2021. He is currently a Member of Institute of Directors Tanzania.
