Recently, the Tanzania Prisoners Hope Foundation (TPHF) in collaboration with the Nendiwe Feminist Wellness and Coaching Centre hosted a transformative event in Mbweni, Dar es Salaam. The seminar brought together nearly 30 formerly incarcerated women, creating a safe and supportive space to learn, share, and heal.
Focusing on Wellness and Human Rights

Under the expert guidance of Mary Rusimbi, participants engaged in meaningful and thought provoking discussions that went beyond surface level conversations. The session explored:
Holistic wellness
This helped in emphasizing the importance of caring for the mind, body, and spirit as interconnected aspects of overall health. Women were encouraged to embrace practices that strengthen self-confidence, restore emotional balance, and nurture physical well-being, especially after the difficult experiences of incarceration.
Human rights
Here, the participants reflected on the value of dignity, freedom, and the essential role of social reintegration. By understanding their rights, the women were better equipped to navigate societal challenges and advocate for themselves in ways that affirm their humanity.
Gender Stereotyping
Another crucial theme was gender stereotyping, with discussions focused on how traditional expectations and biases continue to shape women’s opportunities, both inside and outside prison walls. Participants shared personal stories of how stereotypes limited their choices, but also discovered strategies for challenging these barriers and reclaiming their agency. Together, these conversations created a safe and empowering space that validated the women’s experiences and highlighted pathways for growth, healing and active participation in society
Building Skills for a Better Future

Alongside wellness, the seminar placed a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. Participants explored practical tools for starting small businesses, gaining financial independence, and contributing positively to their communities. One inspiring voice among them was Magdalena Uwelo, who shared her journey after serving five years in prison. Her courage and determination reflect the resilience of many women present — proof that with support, transformation is possible.
